For the past year and a half, I have had the pleasure of working closely with Benefit Washaya. He is a young farmer from Mashonaland Central in Zimbabwe, who has been making a name for himself over the past few years.
Just last year Benefit won Young Pig Farmer of the Year at the annual Federation of Young Farmers Clubs of Zimbabwe (FYFCZ) awards. Then this year he took up the post as Chairman of the Mashonaland Central Committee for the FYFCZ.
Outside of awards ceremonies and meetings Benefit is one of the most passionate and committed farmers I have had the pleasure of engaging. Every day he has to contend with challenges which most people do not ever think about. Factors such as power cuts and fluctuating prices are just a few of the challenges he needs to navigate in his business.
Whilst these challenges would deter most people, Benefit feels it is his duty to his country to provide food. There is no time for rest when the population continues to rise, and even though farming is one of the most thankless jobs around he will not give up.
First Butternut Harvest
Earlier this year he decided to take up vegetable farming notably butternut and cabbage. His first harvest yielded over 4 tons of butternut which sold out in a matter of days. His current clients include a multinational food retailer and hotels around the area.
He certainly has the capacity to supply more markets, so if you want to produce from this superstar all you have to do is ask.
Cabbages Coming Soon.
Benefit, will be harvesting 4800 heads of cabbage at the end of next week. They are of the capture variety from K2.
